Egon Schiele (1890 Tulln an der Donau – 1918 Wiedeń) był, jak na swoje czasy, bardzo kontrowersyjnym artystą, czego najlepszym dowodem było oskarżenie go o szerzenie pornografii. Zajmował się malarstwem i grafiką, wypracowując swój indywidualny, bardzo rozpoznawalny styl inspirowany secesją. Był uczniem Gustava Klimta i wpływ mistrza jest widoczny w wielu dziełach Schielego. Tworzył głównie akty, portrety i autoportrety ale także pejzaże. Połączył go obrazoburczy romans z jedną z modelek Klimta – Valerie Neuzil zwaną Wally, a za uwodzenie nieletniej został oskarżony i skazany na 21 dni aresztu. Ostatecznie jednak porzucił Wally i związał się z Edith Harms. Zmarł mając zaledwie 28 lat na hiszpankę, która to choroba trzy dni wcześniej pozbawiła życia także jego młodą żonę. Wśród najsłynniejszych dzieł Schielego znajdują się takie obrazy, jak Wojownik, Female Lovers, Krumau – Crescent of houses (ten obraz został podczas aukcji w domu aukcyjnym Sotheby’s sprzedany za niebagatelną kwotę blisko 21 milionów dolarów), Lovemaking, Moa, Seated Woman with Legs Drawn Up, Squatting Female Nude, Standing Girl oraz Two Woman Embracing.
